Making a Move? Here’s How to Choose the Right Moving Company
Posted by 1 week ago.

In the midst of purchasing a home and selling your old one, you may not have the actual physical act of moving all of your possessions on the top of your mind. However, once you execute the sale of your home and the purchase of a new home, you need to select a moving company. Here are some tips to help you make the right choice.

Get an accurate quote. An important part of your moving company comparison is likely the price of the services you require. Make sure that you are comfortable from the beginning by asking your potential mover for an estimate.  A good moving company will have an estimator who will thoroughly check your home including storage places such as cupboards, drawers, garages and bookcases. They will also ask you questions to give you an accurate idea of how much your move will cost. Be sure you understand this estimate and get a feel for how you think any potential moving company will handle their work.

Carefully examine your contract. Get all of the details (especially any special requests) in writing. This includes the final cost you agreed to, any extra fees and your pick-up and delivery dates. It is very important to read your contract and make sure all of your belongings are listed. This is for practical reasons: you can't file a claim for something that doesn't appear on your mover's inventory list.

Be wary of requests for a large upfront deposit. A big red flag when looking for a moving company is any request for cash or a large deposit before moving. While a small deposit upfront might be expected, you should pay the bulk of fees upon delivery. Another tip: use a credit card when you pay to help protect you should there be any issues.

Ask for references. The Wagley Group can recommend local moving companies in Lenawee County to you. You can also get a list of reliable movers from associations such as the American Moving and Storage Association. In addition, ask any mover you speak with for references from local customers whom you can contact and ask directly about their experiences.

Reduce costs by doing your own packing. One way to reduce costs when moving is to pack your belongings yourself. However, keep in mind that if you do this, the mover isn't responsible for damage to your property. If you do decide to have your movers pack for you, be prepared to pay for materials and labor.

Make sure your mover is insured. You can ask your moving company to provide proof of insurance. In theory, all moving companies should assume liability for the value of the goods they transport to a degree. There are different levels of liability coverage  you can choose from and your actual mover can provide additional details so that you can select the best option.

Be proactive about any problems you encounter. In general, you have nine months to report any problems to your moving company and file an insurance claim. That is why on moving day, you should open each box and check for any damaged items. You should then detail any problems on the mover's copy of the paperwork you receive before signing it. According to moving.com, your mover usually has 30 days to acknowledge receipt of your claim. Within 120 days of receiving it, they must deny your claim or make an offer to pay.
