Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The snow, the presents, the food, the family, the
story of Christ our Savior…it’s all so splendid! There are many things that come to mind when you think
about Christmas, but I’m certain one thing that doesn’t come to mind is the “M” word. Which “M”
With Lenawee blanketed in homes that are currently on the market, and buyers on the prowl for their perfect home, it’s inevitable that many will be making the move this winter. Although moving before the holidays isn’t likely on anyone’s top list of things to do before the end of the year – it’s not the worst thing that could happen, in fact a new home can be exciting for everyone!
Here are a few helpful tips to make your holiday move a breeze:
The Family: Although transitioning into a new school can be difficult, it seems that the transition can be easier when the move to a new school comes after Christmas break! The long holiday break is a great transition period for your child(ren), but be sure to be prepared with the necessary documents that your child’s new school will be seeking: transcripts, immunization records, etc.
Weather: Michigan winters tend to be a little treacherous. Be sure to watch the weather channel and stay aware of the impending conditions. It’s important to make sure that your utilities have been turned on before the move. In fact, get the utilities turned on as soon as possible to allow your new home to be warm and cozy as you begin your big haul. You (and your helpers) will be grateful for the warmth as you bring each load into the house. Be sure to have snow shovels and sidewalk salt handy! You don’t want to get to your new home and trudge through the snow with heavy boxes. Finally, invest in some waterproof storage containers for any items that may not be put away right away. You don’t want to discover damaged items come spring.
Christmas – The most wonderful time of the year: It’s difficult to get in the Christmas spirit when all your décor and wrapping supplies are hidden away in moving boxes. Store your holiday décor and supplies in clear totes that are easily accessible. In fact, move those items in first! Celebrating your first Christmas in your new home will be important for you and your family! Who cares if the Christmas tree is up before the dishes are put away!
The Season of Giving: We love to give all year around, but there’s something special about giving during the holiday season. As you work through packing up all your belongings be reminded of those in need this season. The sweater that you haven’t worn in a year…donate it to The Salvation Army. The chair that’s been sitting in the corner collecting dust…donate it to Habitat for Humanity. The baby clothes that your two year old has clearly out grown….donate them to Care Pregnancy Center of Lenawee. The pantry full of nonperishables….downsize and donate to one of the amazing food banks in Lenawee.
