Looking to buy a new home in 2021? Here are 5 things you want to do now:

As the calendar turns to January, we begin to reflect on the past and plan for a great new year to come. We set New Year’s resolutions and build lists of our goals and aspirations – one of which could be to buy a new home.

 

In 2020, we spent more time than ever at home. While it came with some perks, many of us weren’t expecting to turn the spare bedroom into an office or classroom, and things that were lacking in the past came to light. Trust us, you aren’t alone in wishing for more space.

 

Luckily, experts are predicting that the housing market will continue to be hot in 2021. So, if you are planning to buy a new home this year, there are things you can do now so the process is less painful and more pleasant:

 

1. Situate your situation

It’s time to get your financial house in order. Pull your credit report and take a good, hard look. Are there things you need to clean up before you apply for any type of financing? Is there an account you can pay off early? Or do you need to show more available credit?

What about your down payment? Do you need to liquidate some funds? Or maybe comes down to save, save, save. These are all things to figure out now.

 

2. Balance your budget

Determine exactly how much money you are willing to spend on your new home and the market will determine how much house that will actually get you. What are your must-haves? How much can you afford each month?

 

These are good conversations to have before you begin shopping for homes and come across one you can’t live without.

 

3. Pick your partners

The next step is to choose your agents for the process. Do you need to sell your current home? Are you a first-time homebuyer? You’ll need an agent who has the specific knowledge for your situation, is a good fit for you and/or your family, and knows the market that you are looking to purchase in.
