November is the season of giving (although, we do encourage you to give all year round)! With our desire to see the season of giving extend beyond the thirty days in November, we thought we’d bring you a list of ways you can give back, right here in Lenawee!
Invite Someone Over (seriously, it’s that easy)
Ok, we thought we’d start off with something easy – something you can do from the comfort of your own home. Do you know of a lonely relative? A neighbor far from home? A college student unable to go home for the holidays? Consider offering up a seat at your dinner table this Thanksgiving.
Donate to Food Banks
Chances are, you have extra cans of food in your pantry right now. Go look. How many cans were there? Be honest… Now consider donating those cans. First, contact a local food bank, then determine what they need. Think outside the box: Sometimes pantries are in need of non-edible supplies, like hygiene products – soap, toothbrushes, etc. Downtown Adrian businesses are collecting items to be delivered to local food banks until December 7th.
Need some ideas: The Daily Bread, Fishes and Loaves, Salvation Army, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tecumseh Service Club
Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen
Although the Thanksgiving season is a great time to volunteer at a soup kitchen; please recognize that soup kitchens see an influx of volunteers during the holidays, but we must remember that hunger is a year-round problem. A few places to consider: The Daily Bread, Fishes and Loaves, The Salvation Army, Share the Warmth.
Visit a Retirement Home
Retirement homes across the county are likely to have handful of residents who won’t see family members during Thanksgiving. Turn to Google, do a little research, and make a few phone calls. Most retirement and assisted living homes will graciously welcome you to come visit with their residents. Be sure to determine what visiting hours are first; take it a step further and take a small gift – a gift isn’t necessarily needed, in fact sometimes the gift of conversation is the greatest gift of all.
Visit the Hospital
Hospitals don’t take a break for the holidays. Give Bixby or Herrick a call and find out if they will accept volunteers for Thanksgiving. Offer to distribute food, bring small gifts to children or elderly, or simply sit and visit with someone. If those aren’t options, remember that the nurses can always use a pick me up – have some Jimmy Johns delivered, drop off some Starbucks gift cards or prepackaged snacks!
Find Time for Four-Legged Friends
Even our furry friends need some love! Give the Lenawee Humane Society a call today to inquire about their volunteer needs. Remember, LHS is always seeking donations of dog/cat food, bleach and other cleaning supplies, and fresh towels and blankets.
These are just a few ideas as to how you can serve in Lenawee, now and throughout the year. The door is always open when it comes to giving to others – take a few pizzas to the local fire department, pay for the person behind you in the drive-thru, donate a few bucks to a local charity, hold the door for someone, or even offer to load someone’s groceries. We invite you to join us in giving back not only this holiday season, but throughout the year. Snap a picture and tag @TheWagleyGroup. We want to see how you are loving in Lenawee.
