God sees you…
Are you afraid that God has forgotten you? Are you angry that God continues to remain silent while you suffer from illness, depression or abuse? Have you ever asked, “Does God really see me?”
The Patriarch Abraham’s wife could not conceive, even after being together in Canaan for 10 years. Sarah was so distraught in not being able to bear a child, that she gave her Egyptian servant Hagar to her husband for a wife. Not long after this union, Hagar became pregnant.
In the days that followed, Sarah became jealous of the pregnancy and treated Hagar harshly. Sarah complained to Abraham because Hagar was holding the pregnancy against her, but he said to do with Hagar as she saw fit. After brutally rebuking and despising this young woman, Hagar can’t take it any longer and runs away.
An angel finds Hagar abandoned in the desert and asked her what she was doing there. Hagar replied that she was running away from her mistress. The angel convinces her to go back to Sarah and be obedient despite the abuse. As she is getting ready to depart, the angel indicates that she will give birth to a son and to give him the name Ishmael. He also exclaims that God will make her descendants into a great nation, beyond counting. Abraham was 88 when Hagar gave him his first son and he called his name Ishmael.
The following words from Hagar may provide comfort to you if you feel lost and alone. After the angel offers comfort and prophesizes about the future of her family, Hagar exclaims, “…She answered God by name, praying to the God who spoke to her, “You’re the God who sees me.” “Yes! He saw me; and then I saw him!” Genesis 16:13 MSG
Another name for one of God’s attributes is El Roi, which means the “God who sees me” or the “God who sees.”
If you are a Christ follower and you feel that God could care less about you and your struggles, please be encouraged by Psalm 139 from David himself.
GOD, investigate my life; get all the facts firsthand.
I’m an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking.
You know when I leave and when I get back; I’m never out of your sight.
You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence.
I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there, too—your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful—I can’t take it all in!
Is there any place I can go to avoid your Spirit? To be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, you’d find me in a minute—
you’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!”
It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.
Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.
Your thoughts—how rare, how beautiful! God, I’ll never comprehend them!
I couldn’t even begin to count them—any more than I could count the sand of the sea.
Oh, let me rise in the morning and live always with you!
And please, God, do away with wickedness for good!
And you murderers—out of here!—all the men and women who belittle you, God, infatuated with cheap god-imitations.
See how I hate those who hate you, GOD, see how I loathe all this godless arrogance;
I hate it with pure, unadulterated hatred. Your enemies are my enemies!
Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about;
See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life. Psalm 139 MSG
For the Christ follower, be assured today that God is infinite in wisdom, power and love and His will has always been directed toward your good.
Honestly, for the non-believer, because you have not accepted personal salvation by God’s grace alone, through faith alone by the finished work of Christ alone on the cross for your eternal life, you stand in direct opposition to the promises that God through Christ, has offered sacrificially to you and all non-believers throughout history. There is however, another way.
If you are looking for new life—ask the triune God to take up residence in your body. And, know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God sees you and is well acquainted with all your ways.
